A Short History of our Custom Brand Hand Sanitizer Operation
Just after the start of the pandemic in 2020, it was impossible to obtain hand sanitizer from shops, supermarkets and even online. Across the world hand sanitiser stocks got cleared out almost overnight.
As a small organisation selling an eclectic mix of products, we approached one of our manufacturers who were responsible for making a range of fluids for us. We asked them to formulate us a hand sanitizer. They did, within a week. It took a couple of formulations to get it right, but we ended up with something that everybody loved; an 80% alcohol based, moisturizing antibacterial hand sanitizer.
At the time, we were being told that 65% alcohol was needed in order to kill coronavirus. So it was good to know that the product we had created had 15% more alcohol than what was needed to destroy enveloped viruses.
Our next job was to get the formula over to our laboratory in order for them to test it's for safety. This took a few days and we were delighted when Oxford Biosciences in the UK produced a Cosmetic Product Safety Report for our hand sanitizer formula.
Next we notified the European Community Cosmetic Product Notification Portal (CPNP) that we intended to sell our product across the eu. This was a legal requirement at the time, pre-Brexit. Since leaving the EU however our hand sanitiser fluid product and it's formula have been notified separately to the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS).
There were other things to do business as usual things such as notifying our own insurance company to ensure that we had public and product liability cover. We also needed to greatly increase the amount of alcohol that we could legally buy in any one year. This is known as an HMRC alcohol licence. I have to say HMRC at the time were brilliant.
Looking back at the enquiries that came in over the next 3-5 months, we could have made in the region of £2.5m a month if our production line had been the right size and if our alcohol licence had it been sufficient. We launched our own brand of hand sanitize and decided on four bottle sizes. We pinged a two paragraph email to our list and within seconds orders began rolling in amounting to thousands of pounds a day, and they've never stopped.
